Document Solutions from FirstChoice – Multifunction printers, office machines & electronic document management

PAC Graphics Case Study In May 1981, Les Allen started a small print business with 2 partners in premises behind Liverpool Street station in London EC2. They called the company PAC Graphics.

Three months later Les bought out his partners and managed the business alone with seven employees until 1985 when his son John joined the company. Les retired eight years ago and John is now directing the company.

Initially PAC Graphics offered black only printing for City-based customers, such as business and invitation cards and tickets for London Underground. Later they installed two Ryboi 2-colour litho machines and a single colour machine with full finishing facilities, which gave their customers a complete colour service.

Following the recession in early 1988, PAC Graphics purchased freehold premises near Tower Bridge in Bermondsey, South London and made the decision to install an Oliver 66 b2 single-colour litho machine. This increased opportunities for them, but when digital printing entered the market in the late 90s, offering a low cost but good quality colour solution, they were unable to compete in short run jobs. This led to purchasing a Xerox 3535 digital colour machine.

In November 2005, a chance call from First Choice Business Systems encouraged PAC Graphics to move faster into the world of digital printing. PAC Graphics invited 6 suppliers to bid for the business, but First Choice won the contract for a Xerox DocuColor
250 machine to work along side the Xerox 3535.

"First Choice outshone the other suppliers on several counts", says John Allen, director of PAC Graphics, "they kept to their word and didn't try to impress us with unrealistic delivery dates.

"Other suppliers were disorganised and took days to submit a quote. Whereas First Choice provided a quote within hours and although they were not the cheapest, they delivered on time and regularly called to check we were satisfied with our purchase. That's what I call good customer service!

"We took delivery of a second Xerox DocuColor 250 in December 2006. First Choice had the machine up and running in just 2 hours and I was able to deliver a job to a customer promptly", says John, "and we have easily realised a good return on our investment.

"Now that we have the second Xerox DocuColor 250 we are able to undertake larger contracts and use the second machine for overspill. Recently, a customer required 250 business cards urgently and we were able to print, finish and deliver them in 20 minutes", says John proudly.

In the future, PAC Graphics will always offer a litho printing facility (particularly as John's brother operates litho only premises in Surrey Quays), but John insists that the demand for digital printing is growing.

"The speed and better resolution of digital printing for short runs is increasing", claims John. "The savings on consumables and time waiting for print to dry make the whole process cheaper and quicker. "
